Public Health Impacts of Climate Change with Dr. Mark Levine, MD—Tuesday, June 23, 6:00 – 7:00pm

This talk will introduce key public health principles to illustrate how public health work is carried out in practice. It will explore climate change as the greatest public health threat of the 21st century, highlighting seven major ways it impacts human health. The presentation will also examine the urgent need for adaptive strategies that allow communities to live with the climate conditions we now face, emphasizing that prevention alone is no longer a sufficient approach.

Dr. Mark Levine served as Vermont’s Commissioner of Health from March 2017 to April 2025, appointed by Governor Phil Scott. Before that, he was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine and held leadership roles in medical education at UVM Medical Center. He earned his B.A. from the University of Connecticut and his M.D. from the University of Rochester, completing his residency at UVM and a fellowship at the University of North Carolina.

An award-winning educator, Dr. Levine continues to teach while maintaining his faculty appointment. Prior to his commissioner role, he practiced general internal medicine with a focus on complex diagnostics, prevention, and nutrition. His career has centered on improving population health through policy and fostering a culture of health for all Vermonters.
